Hello, I am happy to announce that Fox and the City was nominated for a People’s Choice Podcast Award. Specifically, the program was nominated for “Best GLBT Podcast.� I am thrilled about the nomination for a number of reasons. First, iTunes continues to deny queer podcasters a category that makes it easy for listeners to find content relevant to the GLBTQ community. This attitude is echoed in the actions of PodCastAlley, who, to date and despite the support of several queer casters, has never featured a gay themed podcast or video cast. Some might argue that queer categories promote a form of segregation, something akin to “separate but equal.� While I understand the logic behind this sentiment, I believe that podcasts serve a unique function in the gay community. Members of the GLBTQ rarely see or hear mass mediated depictions of gay life that come from members of the queer community. Gay voices made public on podcasts promote a sense of shared discernment among queer people, many of whom are invested in seeing themselves in the media. I am happy to see the People’s Choice Podcast Awards acknowledge the unique contributions of LGBTQ podcasters. It would, however, be insincere of me not to mention the notable absence of lesbians and transgendered people nominated in the GLBT category. I am also tickled by the nomination because I’ve invested 100s of hours of work into making Fox and the City a consistently funny and thought provoking podcast. Many people have flippant attitudes about awards. I am not one of those people. Few people are paid to podcast. Most produce shows for the love of it. Recognition doesn’t hurt in a digital world where disconnection and displacement rule the day. I appreciate all the people who nominated the show and who plan to vote for it.
